The Engineering of an Egg
An egg is such a familiar shape that it is easy to stop seeing it as a shape at all. Nested Eggs asks you to look again: a small clutch gathered together in the woven cup of a nest, drawn entirely in graphite, so that what carries the image is not colour but tone — the soft matting of grass and twig against the smoother, harder curve of shell. Take away colour and an egg becomes pure form: an oval that is never quite symmetrical, always a little more tapered at one end than the other.
That asymmetry is not decorative. Ornithologists have long noted a real connection between an egg's shape and the circumstances it is laid into. Birds that nest on narrow, exposed cliff ledges — guillemots are the classic example — tend to lay eggs that are strongly conical, almost pear-shaped, tapered sharply at one end. Nudge an egg like that and, rather than rolling off the ledge in a straight line, it rolls in a tight circle around its own pointed tip, turning back on itself instead of falling. Birds that nest in more sheltered, enclosed spots — a hollow, a burrow, a well-built cup nest tucked into cover — tend toward rounder eggs, because a round egg has no need to defend itself against a long drop. Shape, in other words, is a quiet record of where an egg was laid and how much protection it had.
The shell itself is a small piece of structural engineering wherever it sits on that spectrum. It is built from calcium carbonate laid down in a fine crystalline structure, and its curved, dome-like form means it can bear a surprising amount of weight pressing evenly from outside — enough for a sitting parent bird to incubate it for weeks without crushing it — for exactly the same reason an architectural dome or arch can carry a great deal of load: distributed force is spread through the whole curved structure rather than concentrated at one point. Reverse that logic, though, and the same shell is comparatively easy to break from a single concentrated tap. A chick pipping its way out taps at one spot, again and again, with the small hard point of its egg tooth, and that same shell that resisted a sitting bird's whole body weight gives way. An egg is built to be strong against pressure and weak against a point — armour on the outside, a door from within.
None of this needed spelling out for the drawing to carry it. Working only in graphite means every distinction between materials has to be found in tone alone: the nest's woven grass reads as a mass of short, broken marks and scattered shadow, while the eggs themselves are built from smoother, more continuous gradations, the pencil pushed and lightened until the curve reads as hard and faintly glossy rather than soft. It is a drawing made almost entirely of shadow rather than line, which gives it a weight and solidity that colour would soften — closer, in spirit, to the way light falls across a carved relief than to a coloured illustration.
